New Tariffs & Goods on the Water: What Importers Need to Know

Over the past few days, many Compass clients have asked us whether the new tariffs taking effect April 9th will apply to goods already in transit to the U.S.?

Here’s what we know:

📌 U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not yet issued definitive guidance on whether shipments already on the water will be subject to the new tariffs.

📌 In previous rounds of tariff implementation, CBP has exempted goods that were already in transit prior to the effective date — but there is no confirmation yet that this precedent will apply here.

📌 Compass is closely monitoring CBP’s official channels for updates.

💡 Our current recommendation: If you have shipments sailing close to April 9th, now is the time to review ETDs and consult your Compass team or your customs broker. Timing may matter — but until CBP clarifies, risk remains.

As always, Compass Forwarding is staying on top of developments and will share updates as soon as official guidance is issued. We’re here to help you plan ahead and protect your margins.
